RESEARCH INTERESTS AND ACTIVITIES:

Colloid and surface chemistry of polymers, especially as it relates to the microencapsulation of bioactive agents. Specific current research areas include: 1. Fabricate and evaluate microcapsules, microspheres and nanoparticles for pharmaceutical, biomedical, food and agricultural applications. A specific example is an ongoing effort to develop and evaluate in the field unique, low-cost microcapsule formulations containing pest control agents like mating disruption pheromones. 2. Prepare capsules that contain phase change materials (PCMs) for heat transfer applications under turbulent flow conditions. 3. Prepare microcapsules that contain epoxy resins/curing agents suitable for adhesive and self-healing coating/composites applications. 4. Develop new methodologies for preparing microcapsules that have unique properties. Of particular interest are particles prepared from biodegradable materials. 5. Develop techniques for assessing the behavior of microcapsules in a variety of use environments. These efforts involve experimental and modeling studies.
